Ramjas College, University of Delhi | Sayed Wasbir Subhani

Amidst much fanfare and celebration the inaugural function of the Biological society, ‘Genesis’ and Zoological Society, ‘Zoon’ of Ramjas College, started with a full score in the reports here on 16th of January 2012. First among the activities was the guest lecture on ‘primates’ by Dr V.K. Srivastava, the principal of the Hindu college.

With the basic customs in Indian tradition like the lighting of lamps, the microphone was finally handed over to our guest lecturer.
Dr Srivastav started the lecture by sharing of some nostalgic memories. He himself is a student of Zoology it took no time for him to carry on his subject of lecture, ‘Primates’. Beginning with the basic definition, he fabricated the topic to his best as the audience sailed in synchronization from Darwinism to Orangutan’s habitat to troops of gorillas or a committee of chimpanzees. He did mention especially about the research of Dr James Goron about her study of chimpanzee behaviour that finally bore her doctoral degree. In his talk, he also mentions about conservation in detail and urges every student to cultivate it as a goodwill to the society. He wittily points to us about the non-existence of the word, ‘Zoo’ and that the main word is ‘Zoological Garden’.
The well absorbed one and a half hour ended on the note that urged students to shed of this human centralism and to give animals their piece of the earth.
Maintaining the Indian standards in time management it did start with a 15 minutes delay but with such an eminent personality as our speaker, the audience was well glued to their seats. As Dr Srivastava stepped down the dais, he did answer a few questions and thanked the audience for being a patient listener and left them with a hope of expecting his lecture in the near future.
