A Pre-Election Analysis by Hail Ramjas (Election 2013)

According to our survey, Bhisma does seem to hold a slight edge over Anil Jaiswal in terms of the number of supporters simply because more students believe that he is better. His supporters say that he has been a very active person in terms helping out students with their admission, fees deposit and similar small but significant problems.
On the other hand, Anil has a lesser number of followers but they certainly have deep faith in him.

Moreover, Anil’s followers came across as a very disgruntled lot who claimed that they had worked harder than the post holders the year before, inspite of having been from the opposite party which they cited as a god enough reason to oppose Bhishma who they believe is Imran Khan’s follower. Moreover, they also claim that Anil's panel is way better than Bhism's. But this doesn’t take away from the fact that many are supporting both their candidates only because either of them is from the same course or stream as theirs, much like people from the same caste vote for a candidate from the same caste. So much for all the education these students have received.  Most weren’t even aware of the agenda that their candidates had, forget about basing their loyalties according to the manifesto.

Indeed, once more it would be the Science block which will play a crucial role, which on a full turnout can greatly influence the results. Bhishm does seem to hold some sway in the Science block, as have his so called ‘predecessors’. But the fact that BA program hasn’t had a freshers batch means that this time it will be a closer call than usual. On the other hand, Anil does seem to be the favourite candidate among the ‘commercees’. But sadly enough for Anil, what has been noticed over the years is the poor election turnout by commerce students. A greater turnout by them thi s this year might just tilt the scales in his favour. Members from ECA societies and courses like Eco and English continue to be an indifferent lot.

Overall, the competition seems to be close and an exciting contest seems to be on the anvil.

Talking about university elections AISA has definitely struck a chord with students this year, especially the freshers who seem to possess a great interest to find a third alternative than the usual NSUI or ABVP thing. Nevertheless, there are many students who are pro-BJP and pro-Congress, who do not ever want to shift from their mainstream. What is interesting though is that ABVP has tried pulling it’s act together this year with a more aggressive campaign. Moreover, AISA has something has brought something more genuine to the table, with agenda based politics, something that DU has been deprived of. So it should be a closer call this year.

The above mentioned views are just based on a small sample survey of 200 odd students and the article's objective isn't to pass any pre-election judgement or tilt the vote in anyone's favour.

With just a night to go before polling, we wish all the panels good luck and hope for a positive change in our college. Irrespective of whoever wins, Hail Ramjas will be eager to work with them for the welfare of our Ramjas college.

But most importantly, do come tomorrow to cast your precious votes! Voting is your right, so use it and use it wisely.
